Children’s activities on site
We are regularly asked about activity options for children.
Supervised by you adults, children here can build endless huts, make dams in the stream, look for ants, piers, gnomes and fairies, enjoy the wind in their hair, the sun on their faces and the clouds in the sky.
And furthermore, there
Vera’s storytelling vest …
is an activity for young & old in which moose and bighorn sheep play a central role. You can choose from 2 variants or agree on both:
* we go to feed the moose ducks and Vera reads from ‘Ten little rubber ducks’ by Eric Carle
* we will feed the Ouessant sheep, these are the bighorn sheep and Vera will read from ‘A butterfly in the meadow’ by Eric Carle & Arnold Sundgaard
The fee is €10 per story, which is the cost of a bag of sheep or duck pellets

Animals on Cortils
Many animals live at Cortils … Pets of some residents include a Kooiker dog, 2 Siamese cats and a Russian Blue cat. The pastures are home to five horses and some seven sheep breeds; Ouessant, Ardennes Voskop, Drents Heideschaap, Gotland Pelsschaap, Wensleydale, Soay and Cameroon. The sheep are kept for wool and meat and, of course, for fun. If you would like to see the sheep up close, make an appointment with Vera (vera@chateaucortils.com). For the fee of a bag of sheep feed a €15, you get a guided walk through both meadows, located next to the forest. You are not allowed to enter the meadows on your own!
Over 40 runner ducks (Indian Bottlenose Duck) currently live on the estate. During the day, they scavenge in the meadows or around the pond for a living. At night, they go to the farm by themselves to sleep safely in the stable. In the morning around 9 o’clock (variation due to summer and winter time), they go out again. Do not feed the ducks bread … the fat and oil is bad for them! If you want to make contact and feed, shred a few leaves of chicory. If you want to experience them storming out of the barn in the morning and attacking the feed, please check with Vera for the right time (vera@chateaucortils.com).
Château Cortils is located in the city triangle of Maastricht – Aachen – Liège.
Apart from visiting these cities, our area offers numerous opportunities for activities, markets, fairs, museums (including the Blegny mine) and so on.

Do you like horses too
And would you like to experience what it is like to ride a horse or interact with a horse on a gentle and
friendly way? Want to experience how much the horses can actually teach us? Once very
different from an ordinary riding school and this too nicely outdoors in nature!
Then be sure to read on because this is also possible at Chateau Cortils!
If you drive up the castle driveway, you may already see them. The beautiful herd of six horses, which
currently reside in some of the pastures on the estate. The horses become so natural
kept as possible which means they have all the space they need and are always outside. Due to their multifunctional
coat, they stay dry and warm even in the worst weather conditions.
I am Enoah, and I invite you to get to know me and my horses. Everyone is welcome, children
of all ages, including those with disabilities and adults may also come. We go together with my
horses to work. With also plenty of time to cuddle, brush and really get to know
the horses. To then enjoy a nice walk outside on (or next to) the horse.
Who is Enoah?
For as long as she can remember, she, like many, loved horses. And so was Enoah always overjoyed when she
went to visit her great-uncle. Who had a farm with cows and a shetland pony along with them.
While the rest of the family went for a walk, she was allowed to come along on that pony and she loved it.
This was her first experience of riding.
Even though she was only about 5 years old at the time and did not visit this family very often at all.
It has always stayed with her how much she enjoyed these moments.
Out in the fresh air, feeling like a team with your horse and taking on the whole world together.

From the age of 8, Enoah was allowed to take riding lessons at riding school de Hoven in Rimburg.
A unique small equestrian centre for which she is incredibly grateful.
After all, here she did not just learn to ride.
But mostly about communication, understanding each other better and dealing with horses with gentleness.
Here she rode for a good six years.
She then chose to go for outdoor rides more often in her neighbourhood on other people’s horses.
Until she got her own groomed horse, Bibo. Through Bibo, she has started to discover more and more her own way with horses.
And she is so happy that this sweetheart, whom the classes she teaches actually started with, has been in her life since 2014.
Because Bibo is still there, at Cortils in the herd.
Through various courses and, most importantly, through her own horses, Enoah continues to learn.
For example, she spent a year training as a horse behaviour trainer at 2Moons and recently got her driving licence. In spring 2020, it hopes to offer carriage rides as well!
Do you have no experience yet or find it exciting?
That’s no problem. We do everything at your pace and tailor the class to your needs. nothing must.
I initially coach one-to-one so that I also have full attention for you. But it is certainly also possible to come in pairs if there is already a little more experience. If you don’t have much experience yet and would still like to come riding with someone else, I also offer horse walks for 2 or more people with one horse. Riders may then take turns, and those who find it even more sociable can also walk along.
